Project Summary
After identifying limitations in existing steering wheel ergonomics and control integration, I designed Virginia Motorsports’ first steering wheel with integrated control buttons to improve driver interaction and cockpit efficiency. The project combines lightweight carbon fiber construction with ergonomic shaping to meet strength, packaging, and mass targets.
In addition to the structural design, control placement was optimized to provide intuitive, driver-focused functionality, establishing a new steering interface approach for the team’s vehicles.
Design Requirements
Structural Integrity: Must be able to withstand competition driving conditions
Rules Compliance: Adheres to FSAE rules and regulations
